Tony will be delivering a talk entitled; The Future of Newspapers and the Media and will cover areas such as the technological challenges and opportunities, the role of social media in the news cycle, changing consumer habits and the Leveson inquiry into Press Standards. Tony is personally responsible for training journalists for the major newspapers and broadcast television channels in the UK. He is a specialist in the media industry and has a wealth of knowledge that he would be willing to share with creative industries who want to get an insight into how the media is likely to change over the next 18 months. His areas of expertise include:

· Developing PR strategy and writing press releases

· Writing for web

‘Is starting abusiness right for you’

The first of 2012’senterprise club kicked off last night with Mohammed Aleem, Enterprise Coachfrom Leeds, York and North Yorkshire Chamber.

Aleem gave an excellent overviewof the key areas that need to be considered when starting out as a newbusiness. He highlighted the importance of developing a business idea into aclear vision. This can be achieved by’ following the enterprise coach ‘honingyour business idea’ exercise. This exercise requires the start up to focus onsixteen key areas, for instance:

Why have you chosen thisbusiness idea?

What difficulties mightyou have?

What can you do toovercome these difficulties?

What are your strengths?Could you use them to create a business.

When do you plan to starttrading?

Who are your competitors?

Who are your customers?

After a group discussionaround these areas Aleem moved on to market research and emphasised theimportance of getting to know both your potential consumers and competitors.

The final part of Aleem’spresentation looked at marketing. Aleem pointed out how marketing is quite abroad term, encompassing many things that we all do on a day to day basis. So,marketing not only includes advertising your goods and services or distributingflyers etc but it can also refer to daily activities, such as telling thepeople you meet on a daily basis about your idea, the image and branding thatyou have for your business, through to the quality of customer care that you provide.

One of the top tips that Itook away form Aleem’s presentation was his advice to draw up a large plan ofall the market research and marketing areas that need to be considered. Aleemsuggested displaying it on a kitchen wall and adding to it each day when anidea occurs to you.

Council urges business to leap into action in 2012

Leeds City Council is asking owners/managers of new start up and micro businesses to ‘save the date’ for an important enterprise event to be held on a date which only comes around once every four years – 29th February.

The ‘Leap into Action’ event is free and will provide an opportunity for businesses to see first hand what business support is available from Leeds City Council and a number of other organisations in the city. It is hoped the event will inspire and inform businesses and new start ups to help them develop and grow their businesses in 2012.

In addition the event is being held as a reminder of the huge variety and scope of information and help available from the Business and Patent Information Service of the council based in Leeds Central Library.

The day will include an exhibition area as well as a number of seminars aimed at anyone thinking about starting up or who has already taken the plunge and wants guidance on areas such as sourcing finance, business support, finding office space, tax and national insurance, how to network, protecting new products and developing brands as well as the hot topic of social media and making the best of it for business.

Simon Brereton, enterprise support team manager for Leeds City Council said:
“At a time when there is a great deal of uncertainty about what business support is available we felt it was important to highlight the large amount of useful information, a lot of which is free, currently available from the council and local organisations.

“For example it’s little known that Leeds has one of the few full-time patent libraries in the UK. An effective patent or trademark search can be a vital first step when developing a new product and can ultimately save you time and money. The event in February will also give business owners a chance to expand their knowledge of business issues and talk to some of the providers.”

The event takes place on Wednesday 29th February 2012 at the Leeds Central Library from 11am to 6.00pm.

The council have also produced an electronic guide which outlines what support is available and how to get in touch with the relevant department or organisation. This week(5th Dec 2011)we were very pleased to have Ed Ryder owner of Biskit ltd presenting to theEnterprise Club.

Edprovided both a motivating and thought provoking talk as he shared his ownexperience of starting and developing a business over the past 8 years.

Here arejust a few of Ed’s pointers that I took away from his talk:

- yourchosen business type should not only reflect what you are familiar with butalso what you are good at and just as importantly, enjoy.

- Beprepared for extreme highs and lows these are much greater when starting out;with time the lows should taper out.

- Investigateand attend the range of workshops and seminars that are available for instancethrough the chamber and Chartered Institute of Marketing.

- Ensureyou consult family and friends. Do they really ‘buy’ into your idea and fullyunderstand what you are doing and what it involves.

- Joingroups such as Linked in; make connections and let people know you’re startinga business.

- Bequite clear about your goals and review them regularly.

- Researchyour market both online and on the high street; ensure there is a demand.

- Donot try and market to everyone – look to see in which groups demand is highestand really get to know your customer.

- Beprepared for change, where you start out and what you start doing may be verydifferent to what you are doing years down the line.

'Researching your business and protecting your products and services'

Work Club Update

Over the past 6 months the central library’s work club has provided support to jobseekers from all walks of life. Many jobseekers cautiously come along to the work club not quite sure what to expect, but by the end of the session most agree that they were able to take something useful away.
Each work club kicks off with a focus topic, which often involves a talk from a relevant organisation, or a job seeker advice worker from within the work club team.

Courses and Training
At our most recent work club Rosemary Sheen and Pam Mcfarlane talked to the group about the range of courses available through Leeds City College including how many hours jobseekers are able to spend studying and the type of courses that are likely to include concessions.
Rosemary told the group about the ‘routeways to work’ scheme which provides a vocational taster to work in a specific sector before applying for employment and/or taking on further training. Examples of areas covered include hospitality, sales and marketing and office work.
Rosemary also outlined details of ‘sector based work academies’ which will provide training, work experience and job interviews for job seekers over the next two years. Sectors covered include call centres, care work and retail. Contact your Job Centre plus advisor to find out more.
After the talk any jobseekers requiring quick advice about any aspect of the job seeking process are able to speak to a jobseeker advice worker. An IT suite is also set aside for jobseekers to access the internet and word processing facilities at the the work club.
The final work club for 2011 runs on Monday 12th December and will focus on preparing for job interviews. Tel 0113 2478266

Discovering Yorkshire Website - Inventors & Inventions

The website contains a searchable database of historical Yorkshire patents available electronically for the first time. The patents have been indexed and are searchable by keywords, inventor, date and patent number. The front page of each patent has been scanned and can be read from the site. Where available a diagram to go with the patent has also been scanned. Over 2,000 patent are searchable through the site with more being added all the time.
Three learning trails are also provided aimed at students in keystage 3. Discover more about the inventions which came from this area and the people behind them. From the mousetrap to the Hansom cab to the inventions which influenced transport development. Learn about the man who made tram travel between Leeds and Bradford possible, the entrepreneur who enabled the first manned flight 50 years before the Wright Brothers, and the pioneering cinematographer who disappeared and was never found. In addition to our own resources Bradford Industrial Museum and Wakefield Libraries have also given us access to resources in their collections. Teachers materials are also available with the site.

Leeds Inventors Group Meeting visit to Zenith Plastic Developments 15.6.2011

This month's meeting will not take place in the central library. Instead we will be visiting Zenith Plastic Developments in Horsforth where Kevin McLeod has kindly offered to show us round. Zenith are involved in product design, prototyping, toolmaking and injection moulding so if you're interested in finding out how your new product takes shape this visit is likely to be of interest to you.

Zenith is approx 5 - 10 mins walk from Horsforth train station and there is also room for parking in front of Zenith just off the road. I've attached a map - if you need any further details please let me know. A group of us will be setting off from the Headrow entrance of the central library at around 5.15 on June 15th and travelling by public transport if any of you want to join us.

We will start at 6pm as usual. It would helpful if you could let us know if you intend to be there and that you are able to arrive by 6pm so that we can start the tour together.

Goldman Sachs 10000 Small Businesses programme

Do you know any businesses that currently have between 5 and 40 employees & want to grow & develop? If so they may be interested in The Goldman Sachs ‘10000 Small Businesses’ programme.

The programme is open to small business owners and social entrepreneurs from across Yorkshire & the Humber and has been designed to provide relevant, high quality support specifically to small business leaders who are seeking to grow their businesses and create additional employment.

Programme participants will receive approximately 100 hours of practically-focused business and management education commencing in October 2011. The curriculum has been specifically designed and is focused on the needs of established small businesses that have the potential and the desire to grow.

The Programme is offered on a fully funded basis to approximately 25 successful applicants. Applicants must have the desire and drive to grow their businesses, create additional employment and have a scalable business model. The business will ideally, currently have between five and 40 employees.

Full details of the programme are attached together with the criteria and the key dates for both the application process & the programme sessions at Leeds University Business School.

Goldman Sachs are holding a number of events to give potential applicants the opportunity to learn more about the programme on:

Tuesday 14^th June 5pm – 8pm at ‘Mind the Gap Studios’ in Bradford

Monday 20^th June 5pm – 8pm at 1 Park Row, Leeds

On the 13th June Leeds Central Library, in partnership with Europe Direct Leeds, will be launching a Work Club.

The Work Club will be a two hour session running from 10.00 to 12.00 on the 2nd and 4th Monday each month. Job seekers will have the opportunity to get support to help them back into work, meet other jobseekers, exchange skills and share experiences.

A structured programme of sessions will provide information and support on a range of essential skills such as:
 IT basics for job seekers

 Setting up an email account

 Writing a CV
 Completing online application forms
 Searching for jobs
 Interview skills
 Researching companies and job sectors

In instances where jobseekers require more in-depth support a referral to a careers advisor will be available.

Over the weeks information on more specific topics including an opportunity to attend talks and visit relevant areas will also be available, examples of topics covered include:

 Courses and training
 Volunteering
 Information on starting a business
 Money management
 Working in Europe

The morning will conclude with the subject of confidentiality; often relied upon but equally as often poorly understood. Mark is noted for eating chunks of Corgi in protest against Prince Philip for hunting foxes and for sitting in a bath of baked beans with chips up his nose and sausages round his head in defence of the full English breakfast. He is often controversial and always extraordinary.

He has crawled the streets of Manhattan dressed up as George W. Bush and rolled a peanut from Goldsmith’s College all the way to Downing Street using only his nose.

Final presentation of the Young Inventors Challenge 9/12/09

Twelve year nine pupils from Horsforth School have taken part in the final presentation of their Young Inventors Challenge – a project run by Leeds Libraries Business & Patent Information

Services at Horsforth Library where they were challenged to come up with their own inventions.

On Wednesday (9/12/09) they met in the ballroom at Horsforth library to present their work to an invited audience. Among the guests was one of the most enterprising young inventors of today – Leeds University student Emily Cummins. Among her various inventions Emily has won world-wide acclaim for her solar-powered fridge and sustainable water carrier which have had a huge impact in the townships of Africa. Having won numerous awards including the Sustainable Design Award at the 2009 Women of the Year Awards, Female Innovator of the Year 2007, Technology Woman of the Future 2006 and Cosmopolitan’s Ultimate Woman of the Year, she was keen to see how the young inventors had developed their ideas.

Emily began proceedings by sharing her experiences of inventing and developing new products. From a very young age she has enjoyed finding out how things work and thinking up new ways of doing things. She emphasised how important innovation is and what a great opportunity it presents to young people.

Then it was the turn of the young inventors. Since September the group have taken part in a series of workshops covering the World of Patents, Patent Searching, Applying for a Patent, Choosing a Name and Market Research. Working in pairs they have produced a portfolio of work and ideas and although they have not produced their inventions they have filed patent applications on them at the UK Intellectual Property Office.Each pair stood up and gave an impressive account of how they had researched their ideas, backing up their accounts with facts and figures from market research they had found and some they had done themselves. There was also an opportunity for the audience to chat to the inventors as they stood by the displays of their work. Emily and Business & Patents staff then spent some time deciding which team had been most impressive in their presentation and throughout the course. Finally Emily presented prizes to the winning team – Andrew Maud and Mussa Said with their Balancing Device – and consolation prizes to the other teams.

The Young Inventors Challenge, supported by Europe Direct Leeds as part of the 2009 European Year of Creativity & Innovation, was, in the view of those running the course, a great success. The pupils have been lively and enthusiastic and it has been great to see them constantly coming up with ideas and discussing their products.

Inventing, protecting and getting to market a new product is a subject area that is not particularly well known to many people and yet is vital in business and industry. These young inventors stated that they had certainly learned from their experience.

Innovator/10, the third Yorkshire and Humber Innovation Awards has been established by Yorkshire Forward to celebrate innovative organisations that are based, or have a major presence in the region. In today's global economy, the ability to innovate can determine the success or growth of a business or of a region, or a country. Of all the triggers for success, the ability to innovate is perhaps the most critical, and therefore the biggest challenge.
Innovator/10 celebrates the outstanding achievements in Innovation and creativity in the region. This year's winners will receive a cash prize of £3,000 to invest in development or research that will enable their business to further enhance their innovative progress.

Young Innovative Business Award

Leeds Business Week will take place 1 - 5 June at Leeds Metropolitan University's Rose Bowl, the new home for Leeds Business School. It will include a series of seminars, conferences and workshops giving you the business tools you need to succeed in business now and in the future. Whether you are a chief executive or a PA, a board member of a large plc or a budding entrepreneur, Leeds Business Week has an event for you.

As part of Leeds Business Week, Business Link Yorkshire will be hosting 2 seminars on 'Improving Your Business in Tough Times' and 'Preparing Your Business for a Brighter Future'. Business Link Advisers will be on hand at both of the seminars to let you know what business support is available.

Improving Your Business in Tough Times 1 June 2009, 9.30am - 1.00pm followed by lunch

Four experienced business leaders from Resolve will offer practical and encouraging advice on how businesses can cope with adversity and improve results. They have a wealth of knowledge about do's and don'ts, how to survive and continue moving forward, how to get the best out of people in difficult situations, and how to prepare your business to spot opportunities in spite of the generally poor economic climate.

It will be a morning event finishing with a networking lunch to provide businesses with an opportunity to talk with the speakers. Business Link will be on hand to talk about what business support is available.

Preparing Your Business for a Brighter Future 2 June 2009, 9.30am - 12.30pm followed by lunch

Aimed at SMEs, this seminar looks at different ways businesses can become more competitive through innovation. You will hear how simple changes transformed a product's potential, how web innovation opened up new markets and how a new identity enabled a business to expand. You will learn how to start the process and find out what support is available to help you.
The event will include guest speakers from Bettys & Taylors, G4S, Kilo 75 and Mechan.
The event will be followed by lunch, allowing the opportunity to network .

Leeds has its very own inventors' circle which meets regularly to discuss ways of making the world that little bit better....

Leeds Inventors Club was founded by Jane Elizabeth Lambert, a barrister of 30 years, who specialises in patent law.She set up the club four years ago because she was concerned about naive inventors falling foul of opportunistic agents....

A good place for any would-be inventor to start is the Leeds club, which meets monthly at Leeds Library.Stef Stephenson and Ged Doonan, work in the Business and Patent Information Service at Leeds Central Library and help run the club.........

Retired Leeds plumber Bill Hyland, 66, came up with the idea for a de-burring tool – a time saving gadget which quickly and safely rounds-off the edges of plastic pipes, making them easier to push into fittings.

Copyright is an automatic legal right which protects original literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works. This includes among other things, sound recordings, broadcasts, photography, film and computer programs. It does not protect inventions or names you give to your product or service. It also does not protect an idea, but rather the tangible expression of the idea in some physical form - a photograph is one example of that expression in physical form.........................

Why is copyright important?
Copyright enables those who have created a work, such as a song, or story, to be paid for their creativity. Others can only use copyrighted work with permission of the copyright owner. They are likely to charge for this permission. Copyright owners can control how their work is used - ie how it is copied, distributed, broadcast or performed. Copyright owners have both economic and moral rights. Anyone who uses a copyright work without permission can be guilty of infringement and action could be taken against them........................................................................
